Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
TAMPA -- Another day. Another lefty. Another great start. The Charlotte Stone Crabs received another pitching performance as Grayson Garvin got the run support he needed in a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees on Saturday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Just like C.J. Riefenhauser's Friday start, Garvin worked six shut-out innings to put his club in position to beat Tampa. The Stone Crabs (21-20) took a 2-1 lead in this four-game series and moved above .500 for the first time since April 27 with the win.
Garvin (2-3) struck out three men and did not issue a walk over six scoreless innings. Tampa (17-25) managed just four hits against Garvin, and only one of those escaped the infield. That fine effort earned Garvin his second win in as many starts.
Riccio Torrez delivered a run-scoring single to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. His blooper to shallow right brought Brandon Allen across, but also allowed Mike Mahtook to score on Yankees outfielder Rob Segedin's fielding error.
The Stone Crabs added two more in the sixth inning as Brett Nommensen singled to get things started. Riccio Torrez worked a walk before Derek Dietrich's single loaded the bases with no one out. Hector Guevara and Steve Tinoco both delivered sacrifice flies to give Charlotte a 4-0 lead.
Mikie Mahtook's hustle double helped the Stone Crabs add another run in the seventh. His well placed liner to right center was just far enough away from Yankees center fielder Ramon Flores to allow Mahtook to beat the throw to second with a head first slide. Nommensen followed on the next pitch with a single up the middle to make it a 5-0 game.
The duo of Garvin and Patterson helped the Stone Crabs run the club's scoreless streak to 18 innings before Tampa was finally able to cash in for a run in the bottom of the ninth. Patterson worked the final three frames to earn his first save of the season.
Charlotte collected 12 hits in the game as eight of the nine men in the order collected at least one base hit. Guevara was the odd man out, but he had a sacrifice fly in the two-run, sixth inning rally.
Allen continued his Major League rehab assignment with a start in left field for Charlotte, and finished 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
The series concludes on Sunday with some matinee baseball. Lefty Enny Romero will make the start for Charlotte against Tampa righty Sean Black. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
