Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

DAYTONA BEACH -- With starter Matt Loosen in control on the mound, the Daytona Cubs staged a pair of three-run rallies to deal the Charlotte Stone Crabs a 6-1 defeat on Tuesday.

Loosen (8-3) assumed the Florida State League lead in victories with 7-1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed just five hits and three walks while striking out six batters.

Cubs lead-off man Matt Szczur had a busy night setting the table and delivering key hits in the winning effort. He finished with three hits, two RBI's and a pair of runs scored.

The night belonged to the starters until Daytona struck for three runs against Charlotte's Albert Suarez in the bottom of the third. Micah Gibbs' bloop single and a broken bat double up the first base line by Elliot Soto had the Cubs poised for the big inning.

Unfortunately, Charlotte's defense let Suarez down with a pair of errors amidst the third inning Daytona rally. Szczur laced a two run single and reached second on a throwing error by Stone Crabs center fielder Cody Rogers. A second throwing error, this one charged to shortstop Derek Dietrich on Roni Torreyes' infield single, allowed Szczur to score the third run of the inning.

The Stone Crabs lone run came in the top of the seventh. Robi Estrada's sacrifice fly brought in Riccio Torrez to trim the Daytona lead to 3-1, but the bottom of the inning would prove even busier.

Though he pitched deep into the game, Suarez was unable to avoid two-out trouble in that fateful seventh inning. He walked a pair of hitters, which sparked a three-run scoring outburst which helped Daytona put the game completely out of reach.

Riccio Torrez finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and has now collected seven hits over the first three games of the series.

The series concludes on Wednesday as the two clubs will play an afternoon matinee. Righty Eliazer Suero will take the ball for Charlotte as they seek a series split. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
