Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
CLEARWATER -- In what will certainly not go down as the finest game for either side, the Clearwater Threshers handed the Charlotte Stone Crabs an 8-3 defeat on Saturday at Bright House Field.
With a full moon in the sky, walks, hit batsmen, all kinds of errors and more than a few runners left on base told the story of a sloppy night of baseball. Clearwater was able to patch together the necessary offense to pull even in the series through two contests.
Threshers starter Brody Colvin (2-2) walked a season-high six batters over his five innings of work, but departed with the lead. He allowed three runs - two earned - on just three hits while striking out four batters as well.
Albert Suarez (0-2) was not as fortunate. The Stone Crabs starter was touched up for six runs - though just three earned - on seven hits, but was also guilty of hitting three batters.
Both Clearwater runs in the third inning scored without the benefit of hit. Suarez plunked both Edgar Duran and Albert Cartwright. A fielding error from Robi Estrada allowed the first run to score, while the second came across on Jim Murphy's sacrifice fly.
The Threshers pulled away for good with a two-run fourth inning. After Anthony Hewitt's lead-off single, Chris Duffy was awarded first base on catcher's interference by Mayo Acosta. Two batters later, Duran poked a seeing-eye single to right field that chased home Hewitt. Duffy came across with the second run of the inning when Pete Lavin grounded into a double play.
Eliazer Suero took over for Suarez in a messy sixth inning that saw Clearwater pad the lead even further. Cartwright blasted a doubled off the right field wall with the bases loaded to bring two more across. That highlighted a three-run frame and gave the Threshers a 7-2 advantage.
The night belonged to Hewitt, who came into the game batting just .161 but finished with a 4-for-4 performance. He put the exclamation point on his evening with a towering home run to left off Suero in the seventh inning.
Just one night after setting a season-high in hits, the Stone Crabs managed just five against a trio of Threshers righties. Charlotte had ample opportunities thanks to seven total walks by Clearwater pitchers, but stranded eight runners on base.
With the loss, Charlotte fell to 9-1/2 games behind the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League South Division first half standings.
The series continues on Sunday as the Stone Crabs play their first day game of the season. Charlotte sends unbeaten lefty Braulio Lara to the mound against fellow southpaw Jesse Biddle of the Threshers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
