Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE - For the second consecutive night, the Charlotte Stone Crabs had everything working in their favor as they breezed by the Daytona Cubs 8-3 on Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Stone Crabs offense got things going in a hurry against Daytona starter Frank Del Valle (2-1), plating four runs in the first inning.
Ty Morrison tripled to lead it off, and after Hector Guevara was hit by a pitch, Mikie Mahtook singled home Morrison for the first run. Two batters later, Riccio Torrez hit his second home run in as many days, a three-run shot, and Charlotte found themselves firmly in command.
That was all Stone Crabs starter Albert Suarez (1-2) needed as the righty cruised through six innings. He allowed just one run on six hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. It was the third quality start of the season for Suarez as well as an excellent bounce back effort after surrendering six runs in each of his last two outings.
The Stone Crabs padded their lead with a run in the second inning before breaking the game wide open in the sixth against Cubs reliever Larry Suarez. With the bases loaded, Mayo Acosta singled in two runs and a Cody Rogers single plated another to give Charlotte an 8-1 lead.
Acosta continues to scorch his way through the month of May. The Charlotte catcher banged out two more hits in Thursday's win and is now batting .354 with nine RBI's this month.
Charlotte looks to close the series off with three straight victories Friday. Lefty Braulio Lara takes the mound against fellow southpaw Austin Kirk of the Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
