Brandon, Manitoba - The first two months of the 2011-12 Western Hockey League season have been an exciting time for Brandon Wheat Kings' veteran right-wingerMark Stone.
Not only was the 19-year old Winnipeg product named Captain of the Wheat Kings in September, he signed his first professional contract - inking a National Hockey League Entry Level deal with theOttawa Senators. As well, he enters the month of November among the league scoring leaders and on Monday morning, he was named the firstTip Top Tailors Wheat Kings' Player of the Monthfor the 2011-12 Western Hockey League season.
A sixth round draft choice of the Senators in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Stone is currently tied for second with Medicine Hat'sEmerson Etemin the WHL Scoring race with 31 points. Stone and Etem are currently one point back ofKevin Sundhar of the Victoria Royals, who leads the league with eleven goals and 32 points in 17 games.
In fifteen games this season Stone has eleven goals and 20 assists while registering an impressive plus / minus ranking of +13 (4th best in the WHL). A 2-time winner of the Tip Top Player of the Month Award during the 2010-11 campaign, Stone has scored four powerplay and two shorthanded goals during the opening month of the regular season.
His 15-game point scoring streak is the longest in the WHL this season.
Entering Tuesday's game against the Broncos in Swift Current, Stone has scored 76 goals and 204 points in 181 career WHL games. Last season, he finished third in league scoring with 37 goals and 106 points.
In recognition of the monthly honour, he will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings.
While Stone captured the Wheat Kings' Player of the Month Award on two occasions last season, other winners includedScott Glennie, Michael Ferland andRyan Pulock.
Stone and the Wheat Kings will carry a 9-5-0-1 record into Tuesday's game against the Broncos. Following the game, Brandon will return home for back to back games this weekend against the Calgary Hitmen and Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and Saturday nights.
