Saint Louis FC News Release
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Saint Louis FC lost 1-0 to Real Monarchs SLC in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,432 fans at Toyota Stadium in Match 15 of the USL Regular Season.
Real Monarchs scored the lone goal from the penalty spot with Chandler Hoffman stepping up for his sixth goal of the season in the 15th minute. The conference leaders would hold on to earn all three points and improve to 11-3-1 on the season while Saint Louis FC moves to 5-5-5 in the USL Western Conference.
The first half saw Saint Louis FC create the most chances and they nearly got on the scoresheet in the 7th minute when Joey Calistri was played behind the defense and had his shot canon off the crossbar and cleared from the goal line. Real Monarchs were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute after the referee judged there to be a foul in the box during a corner kick and Hoffman made STLFC goalkeeper Tomas Gomez dive the wrong way for the conversion. STLFC had a number of scoring opportunities from corners and Sam Fink nearly scored with a bullet header in the 45th minute that was well-saved by Real Monarchs goalkeeper Connor Sparrow to see the away side maintain the lead at the halftime break.
The temperature seemed to play a factor in the second half as both teams created few opportunities. Andrew Brody had a solo effort saved by Gomez in the 64th minute before Calistri responded with a volley in the 72nd minute that went narrowly wide. The last chance fell to substitute Seth Rudolph in the 77th minute who hit the ball with power but it was saved by St. Louis native Sparrow to preserve the clean sheet and earn the win for the USL Western Conference leaders.
"It's tough to not feel hard-done by to be honest as we feel cheated," said STLFC Head Coach Anthony Pulis. "It's frustrating as it was probably the most dominate we've been at home this year and we had wave after wave of attack and had them pinned in. We missed too many opportunities that we should have taken and, besides the penalty kick, I don't remember them having many chances. Again, I'm proud of the players because of how dominant they were tonight and I'm gutted for them because I thought we deserved more for our performance."
