May 19, 2005 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Charlotte Sting News Release
The Charlotte Sting will open their ninth season of WNBA action on Saturday, May 21, at 6 p.m. when they host Washington at the Charlotte Coliseum. The game is sponsored by BET and will feature the Sting debut of newly-acquired veterans Tangela Smith, Helen Darling and Sheri Sam as well as the professional debut of the #1 pick in the WNBA Draft, Janel McCarville.
"We are excited to open our 2005 season in front of the hometown fans," said General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey. "We've had a busy offseason where we acquired some new players and are now wrapping up a very competitive training camp. We are looking forward to tipping off against Washington on Saturday night."
Led by three-time WNBA All-Star Dawn Staley, the Sting will face Washington in the first of four match-ups this season. The Mystics roster features several ties to North Carolina including Shelby native Charlotte Smith-Taylor, former North Carolina State star Chasity Melvin and former Duke standout Alana Beard.
The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive commemorative t-shirts courtesy of BET and 2005 schedule magnets courtesy of STAPLES. Prior to tipoff, fans can participate in a free fan fest on the concourse, which includes inflatable games, activities and a live radio remote by local media partner Power 98.
Halftime will feature artist Young MC, who will perform his hit song "Bust A Move". Young MC collaborated with Tone Loc in the late 1980's on songs such as "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" before recording "Bust A Move". The song became an instant hit and won a Grammy in 1990 for best rap performance. In addition, R&B sensation Randevyn will perform the national anthem.
Tickets for the game start as low as $10 and can be purchased by calling 1-877-WNBA-TIX, at the Charlotte Coliseum box office, any Ticketmaster location or online at www.charlottesting.com.
The Charlotte Bobcats Organization includes the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA), the Charlotte Sting (WNBA), C-SET (Carolinas Sports Entertainment Television), a 24-hour regional sports network covering the North and South Carolina, and the New Charlotte Arena, opening in the fall of 2005.
