July 8, 2022 - Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL)
Edmonton Stingers News Release
EDMONTON, AB- The Edmonton Stingers of the CEBL will take on the Hamilton Honey Badgers this Saturday at 2 p.m. The Honey Badgers recently clinched a playoff berth with a win over the Ottawa Blackjacks Saturday, the first team in the league to punch their postseason ticket.
Sitting in first place the Honey Badgers face staffing shortages, as Christian Vital and Jeremiah Tilmon, their first and third leading scorers, have been called up the the NBA Summer League. Canadian Caleb Agada will look to step up his scoring (14.5 points per game) in their absence.
The Stingers faced their worst shooting slump of the season in a road loss to Niagara on Wednesday, managing only 38.5% from the floor in the 97-69 loss to the third place River Lions. Leading scorer Brody Clarke attempted only 4 shots in the loss, and will look to rebound with a strong performance tomorrow.
Jordan Baker paced the team Wednesday with 18 points, bringing his scoring average to 11.8 points per game to go alongside a league best 10.8 rebounds per game. He is the only player averaging over 10 boards per game, and the only player to average a double-double in the league. Recent signee Derrick Woods will make his Stingers debut Saturday. The 6'8" New Jersey native most recently competed in Mexico, and brings ferocious athleticism to the already loaded Stingers frontcourt, consisting of the team's top four scoers: Clarke, Baker, Marlon Johnson Jr., and Aher Uguak.
Expect a tight match on Saturday as the Honey Badgers adjust to their new lineup and the Stingers regain home court advantage. The Stingers are celebrating Women in Basketball this Saturday, and have invited 200 girls basketball players to the game. This will also be the first Stingers game nationally televised by CBC this season.
We kindly ask that all game day credentials be requested in advance through our website.
All Stingers players and coaches will be available for interviews following the game.
