Willmar Stingers News Release

WILLMAR, Minn. - The season ended the same way it began - with a Stingers win in front of a jam-packed Bill Taunton Stadium and fireworks to boot. Willmar (41-29) fell short of the playoffs, but the Stingers won six of their final eight games, three players were named to the post-season all-star team and Marc Flores earned the organization's first ever Northwoods League MVP award.

The Stingers defeated the Waterloo Bucks 7-5 on "Fan Appreciation Night" and provided plenty of fireworks along the way. Nick Halamandaris (California) registered his 7th home run of the season to plate the game's first pair of runs in the 4th inning, Zack Tillery, the CDI player of the game, (Florida Gulf Coast) gave Willmar the lead for good on a 2-RBI double in the 7th and Marc Flores (Hawaii) set a new Northwoods League record with his 26th double of the season. With Tillery at second base and one out, Flores hit a chopping ground ball past the mound into centerfield, a hit that on most every occasion in the history of baseball has simply been a single. But keenly aware that he was on the brink of making history Flores rounded first with the kind of bullish confidence he's demonstrated all season, sliding in under the tag and setting off the near-1,500 fans in attendance.

Logan Moon (Missouri Southern) registered a pair of singles and stole a pair of bases, finishing the season as the leading base-stealer for the Stingers with a total of 10. Colton Bottomley (Florida Gulf Coast) continued his late-season tear with a base hit, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Bottomley was batting just .240 on July 18th but finishes the season at .310, the fourth highest average on the team.

Colin Poche (Arkansas) registered a quality start, pitching 7.0 innings as he scattered ten hits and earned his team-leading 6th win of the season. Cody Hughes (Montevallo) picked up his 3rd save of the season and the Stingers completed the away-home two-game sweep over the Waterloo Bucks (51-19).
