Charlotte Sting News Release

The Charlotte Sting named Shelley Patterson as an assistant coach, it was announced today by General Manager Trudi Lacey. Patterson joins Earl Cureton on Head Coach Muggsy Bogues' coaching staff.

"We are happy to have Shelley join our staff," said Lacey. "We are thrilled to have a coach of her caliber and with her experience join our team as we continue building for the 2006 season. She is a tremendous addition and will be a great asset to the staff we already have in place."

A 17-year coaching veteran, Patterson joins the Sting with seven years of WNBA experience on her resume. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks during the 2005 WNBA season.

Patterson got her start in the league in 1999 in Houston where she served as an operations assistant for the Comets. She then spent four years working as an assistant coach with the Indiana Fever, after joining the team in 2000 for their inaugural campaign. She also has served on the coaching staff for the Phoenix Mercury.

"I'm really excited for the opportunity," said Patterson. "I'm looking forward to helping the Charlotte Sting return to their winning tradition. This organization has been a mainstay in the league and I am looking forward to being a part of it. I believe in this organization and the commitment that has been made to this team."

In addition to her work in the WNBA, Patterson has served as head coach for the National Women's Basketball League's (NWBL) Chicago Blaze in 2005 and worked as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Rage of the American Basketball League (ABL) during the 1998-99 season.

She began her coaching career in 1989 as a recruiting coordinator at Indiana State University and has served stints at Ohio University, the University of Arizona, Wake Forest and Dayton.

As a player, Patterson spent her collegiate career at Washington State University where she still ranks among the school's all-time leaders in assists and steals.
