Sussex Skyhawks News Release
The Sussex Skyhawks (7-7) rebounded against the New Jersey Jackals (8-8) on Saturday afternoon, winning 7-5 after being shutout 1-0 the night before. Sussex came back from a 5-1 deficit with a five-run bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-RBI double by Chase Fontaine and a three-run homerun by DH Caleb Stewart. The 'Hawks added a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when 2B Joe Persichina recorded an RBI groundout with the bases loaded. Sussex closer RHP Duaner Sanchez came in for the ninth and recorded his fifth save despite surrendering a solo homerun to New Jersey DH Jordan Newton, his second solo shot of the day. Newton's long ball was the first run Sanchez has allowed all season.
Sussex RHP Tim Stringer, the team's fifth starter, recorded the win. He was skipped in the starting rotation because of the team's two consecutive off-days on Wednesday and Thursday of this week but relieved LHP Jeff Icenogle to start the fifth inning after Icenogle gave up five runs in four innings on eight hits and three walks. The Jackals mustered just one hit and one walk off of Stringer in his three innings of work.
New Jersey starter RHP Chris Allen took the loss. He pitched well through four innings but failed to preserve the visitors' 5-1 lead in the fifth. He was replaced after allowing six runs on 10 hits and one walk in five innings.
Sunday afternoon, the Skyhawks will wrap up a three-game set with the Jackals at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park. It will be Senior Day at the ballpark; senior citizens receive $2 off admission and can eat for free by presenting a coupon from the New Jersey Herald. LHP A.J. Wideman will start for New Jersey against Sussex's RHP Jusef Frias in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
