Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (March 9th, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads retained first place in the Eastern Conference of the CBA with a 100-79 victory over the Michigan Mayhem at the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon. Gary picked up six quarter points with the victory, strengthening their narrow hold on the conference lead.
The Mayhem may only have seven victories on the season, but three of them have come at the expense of the Steelheads in Muskegon. Thus, Gary needed a focused performance to get a much-needed victory.
In a tightly-played first quarter, Gary prevailed 20-17 to secure the first quarter point of the game. The Steelheads opened up their lead with a 28-14 second quarter, earning the second quarter point and taking a 48-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Steelheads only stumble came in the third quarter, when the Mayhem earned their only quarter point 28-27. Gary recovered for a 25-20 fourth quarter, earning their third quarter point along with three more for the victory.
The Steelheads placed six players in double figures, with three of them registering double-double performances with the win. Forward Carl Mitchell paced all scorers with 20 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Guard Brian Chase added 19 points, while handing out 11 assists. Forward Renaldo Major contributed 15 points with 10 rebounds, while forward Randy Holcomb added 14 points, swingman Robert Griffin 13 and forward Marlowe Currie 10. The Steelheads outrebounded Michigan 58-47 and committed only 14 turnovers.
Michigan was paced by forward Dubrey Black, who fired in 19 points. Former Steelheads' center Lonnie Jones scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Jamar Brown and Keith Salscheider each added 11 points.
With the victory, the Steelheads improved its Eastern Conference lead with a quarter point average to 4.07. Gary has one regular season game to play, a rematch with the Mayhem at the Genesis Center Saturday night. The Rockford Lightning, who stand in second place in the CBA's Eastern Conference, won at Albany 119-116. Rockford earned five quarter points with their win, raising their quarter point average to 4.02 with two games to play (at Albany Friday night and vs. Dakota Sunday in Rockford).
The Steelheads finished their seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record, including overtime losses in the first two games. They have now won 12 of their last 17.
Gary hosts the Mayhem in the regular season finale at the Genesis Center Saturday night. WJOB in Hammond (1230khz) and WIMS in Michigan City (1420khz) have announced they will carry the play-by-play of the game following their broadcast of high school tournament basketball. The scheduled broadcast of Thursday night's game did not air due to telephone line problems at the L.C. Walker Arena.
