Steelheads Sign Fan Favorite Rob Griffin

GARY, Indiana (April 5, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads announced the signing of 6-foot-5 swingman Rob Griffin for the upcoming 2007 USBL season. Griffin stood out as Gary's sixth man on the team that reached the CBA Finals during the 2005-2006 season. A slick shooter and fan favorite, Griffin averaged 9.5 ppg during the regular season and 7.3 ppg during the playoffs that year.

The following summer, Griffin was signed by the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. He played with the team throughout the pre-season and was one of the last players released.

He then joined the Pittsburgh Xplosion in the CBA, where he had an outstanding season. Griffin finishing third in the league in scoring with a 20.7 ppg average and third in the league in free throw shooting at .881 percent. While playing for the Xplosion, Griffin was also reunited with former Steelheads' coach Jaren Jackson, who took over the Pittsburgh position at mid-season.

Griffin played briefly with the Michigan Mayhem during the 2004-05 CBA season. During 2003-04, he played in England with Pertemps Birmingham Bullets, where he averaged 17.6 ppg. and 4.7 rpg. He also had a stint with the Harlem Globe Trotters during 2003.

Griffin played two years of college ball at Southeastern Community College, before transferring to Iowa. He averaged 12.2 ppg. in his year with the Hawkeyes.

The Steelheads will open their inaugural season in the USBL on Friday, April 13th, hosting the Jackson Wildcats at the Genesis Center. Tipoff is set for 7:05PM, CDT. The two teams will meet in a Genesis Center rematch the following evening, Saturday, April 14th.
