GARY, Indiana (December 13, 2005) - The Gary Steelheads were out muscled by the Idaho Stampede at the Genesis Center Tuesday night, 106-97. With the loss, Gary fell to 6-6 on the season and surrendered first place in the CBA's Eastern Conference to the idle Rockford Lightning.
The Steelheads fell behind 31-26 at the end of the first quarter, but came back with a strong second quarter for a 55-48 halftime lead. It was the only quarter the Steelheads would win.
At the half, Idaho had a 22-19 lead on the boards. In the second half, the Stampede front line dug in and built the rebounding advantage up to 16 for the game. Both 7-foot-1 center Eric Chenowith and 6-foot-9 forward Matt Freije had double-doubles. Chenowith tossed in 22 points to lead the winners, while Freije added 20. Both players had 11 rebounds.
Jimmie "Snap" Hunter paced Gary scorers with 30 points, while Randy Holcomb added 17 and Brian Chase 16. Hunter also paced the Steelheads with 7 rebounds. No Gary front court player had more than 5 carums.
The Steelheads host the Michigan Mayhem at the Genesis Center on Thursday night. Game time is 7:05PM.
