
Steelheads "light" it up in home opener

Gary, IN: The Gary Steelheads opened their fifth season of play, at home in the Genesis Convention Center against the Rockford Lightning tonight. Home is were the heart is, and so was a 123-109 (6, 1) victory by the Steelheads in front of 4,667 hometown fans.  The Steelheads jumped out to a first quarter lead, 26-20, and then took the second quarter by the score of 33-23 to lead at half 59-43. Jemeil Rich led the for the Steelheads with 15 points and 5 assists. Ray Young had 12 points on 5 for 7 shooting. Brian Lubeck had 10 points for the Lightning.  The third quarter was more of the same, as the Steelheads won the quarter 34-28 and were looking to sweep the Lightning. The Lightning however, would not be denied and battled back to within seven points. David Graves, with a game high 27 points hit an open three pointer to quell the run for the Steelheads as they coasted to a 123-109 victory.  Leading the way for the Steelheads was Graves with 27 points. Ray Young had 22 points and hometown star Jemeil Rich had 20 points to go along with 10 assists. Shelly Clark cleaned the glass for the Steelheads, with a game high 12 rebounds. Leading the way for the Lightning was the amazing Ronnie Field with 20 points. Guy Rucker had 19 points and Stais Boseman had 18.  "We played very well for three and a half quarters," said Steelheads Head Coach Duane Ticknor. "We competed and got out and did the things we have been working on for two weeks. David was outstanding from both the field and the line tonight for us. Ray Young announced his presence and Jemeil is Jemeil, what more can you say. This was a team effort from top to bottom. This was a very good win for us because Rockford is a very good team. I know they will be trying to reverse the situation tomorrow at their place." Â
