Gary Steelheads News Release

GARY, Indiana (May 26, 2007) - A poor fourth quarter did in the Gary Steelheads, who fell to the Kansas Cagerz for the fourth straight time Saturday night, 113-99. It was also the fourth time in four meetings that the Cagerz have defeated Gary, the second time at the Genesis Center. Kansas accounts for both Gary home court defeats this year.

The final score may not indicate it, but the first three quarters of this game were closely contended with neither team leading by more than four points. The game was tied at half, 58 apiece. The Cagerz had an 82-81 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Gary forward Jamario Moon hit on an inside basket beginning the fourth quarter, as the Steelheads seized the lead at 83-82. It would be the last lead for the home team. Forward Anthony Richardson scored for the Cagerz, grabbing the lead back at 84-83. Kansas went on to a 20-3 run that sealed the victory. The Steelheads reached 86 points, only to be stuck there for 5:41. The drought was fatal to Gary's chances.

Gary shot well early in the game, but their field goal percentage fell to .429 by the game's end. The Cagerz went the other way, finishing at .513. The Cagerz took the boards for the third time in four meetings, 45-38.

The Steelheads welcomed back center Chris Alexander, and he delivered a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Thirteen of those points came in the first half. He hit 7-of-10 field goal attempts for the game. Eddy Barlow paced five double-digit scorers for the Steelheads with a season-high 20 points, along with 9 assists. Forward Corey Minnifield added 17 points, guard Carl Edwards contributed 15 points and forward Marlowe Currie chipped in 10 points.

The Cagerz were paced by forward Anthony Richardson, who scored a game-high 24 points, and was just one rebound and one assist away from a triple-double with nine apiece. Guard Anthony Johnson scored 21 points with 8 rebounds for the victors.

With the loss, the Steelheads' losing streak extended to three straight games. Gary fell to 10-7 on the year, while Kansas improved to 11-6.

The two teams will rematch at the Genesis Center on Memorial Day, with a special start time of 5:00PM CDT. Veterans will be honored and will receive reduced rates on their tickets.
