Gary Steelheads News Release

GARY, Indiana - The Gary Steelheads, playing the fourth game in their most challenging road trip of the season, lost at Idaho, 103-98. In the process, the Steelheads surrendered the lead in the Eastern Conference to the Rockford Lightning by 3/1000's of a quarter point. Rockford has a quarter point average of 4.059, while Gary stands at 4.056.

As was the case last night at Yakama, the Steelheads started slowly. Gary shot just .269 from the field in the first quarter, losing the quarter point to the Stampede 25-22. But the Steelheads fought back, holding Idaho to just eight field goals in the second quarter for a 23-19 quarter win and a 45-44 halftime lead.

Idaho scored the first eight points of the third quarter to regain the lead, before Marlowe Currie scored the first basket for the Steelheads at 9:39. Gary misfired on six three pointers, falling behind by nine points before adjusting their attack inside to overtake the Stampede and win the third quarter 31-28. But the Steelheads, playing their fourth road game in five nights (two of the overtime losses), ran out of gas in the fourth quarter as Idaho prevailed 103-98.

Gary placed six players in double figures, paced by guard Brian Chase with 22 points. Guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter tossed in 17, and guard Eric Chatfield added 15. Forward Carl Mitchell, contributed a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds in a losing cause.

The Stampede were paced by forward Eric Williams, who tossed in 19 points with 8 rebounds. Newly-acquired forward Desmond Ferguson added 17, and Idaho center Eric Chenowith contributed a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Chenowith set a single-season franchise record for rebounding at 521, when he grabbed his sixth rebound of the game in the second quarter.

The Steelheads will get some much deserved rest before heading to Albany for back-to-back road games at the Washington Avenue Armory next Thursday and Friday night. The Rockford Lightning will host the Patroons Sunday afternoon at the MetroCentre in Rockford. They will also host the Michigan Mayhem Tuesday night.
