Steelheads Earn Top Seed in CBA Playoffs

GARY, Indiana (March 11, 2006) - It was all decided in one game played 2,000 miles away. The Yakama Sun Kings hosted the Sioux Falls Skyforce, with the playoff seeding for all four of the top positions hanging in the balance. By the time the game was over, the Steelheads had emerged with the top seed for the upcoming playoffs as the Sun Kings beat the Skyforce, 104-93.
The game started well for the Sun Kings, winning the first two quarters and taking a 64-56 lead into the locker room at halftime. But when Yakama sputtered with its lowest-scoring quarter of the season, the Sun Kings limped to the end of the third quarter with just a 79-78 lead. But Yakama roared back to win the fourth quarter and the game, 104-93. In the process, the Sun Kings earned six quarter points to leapfrog past the Skyforce and win the Western Conference.
The Gary Steelheads' earned the CBA's top seed based on 197 quarter points and a quarter point average of 4.10. Gary finished its regular season Saturday night with a 104-94 win over the Michigan Mayhem. The Sun Kings, champions in the West, seized the second playoff seed with 195.5 quarter points and a 4.07 quarter point average.
The Skyforce, who had an 11-game win streak snapped at Idaho Saturday night, managed just two quarter points in their final two games of the regular season. They fell to the third playoff slot with 194 quarter points and a 4.04 quarter point average. The Rockford Lightning, winners earlier in the day over the Dakota Wizards 133-115, finished in the fourth playoff slot with 192 quarter points and a 4.0 quarter point average. The top three playoff slots are rewarded with two home games in the best-of-three first playoff round.
The CBA will announce the first-round pairings and dates on Monday.
