Steelheads Defeat Patroons 115-109: End Patroons Six-Game Win Streak

GARY, Indiana - After a stinging last-second defeat at Albany Thursday night, the Gary Steelheads defeated the Patroons in a rematch Friday night, 115-109. With the win, Gary improved its record to eight games over .500 and picked up five quarter points. Albany saw its winning streak stopped at six games.

Playing for the second straight game without all stars Jimmie "Snap" Hunter and Randy Holcomb, the Steelheads closed ranks and distributed the scoring load among six players in double figures. Forward Carl Mitchell, playing against his former team, stepped up with a 24-point performance. Guard Eric Chatfield added 23 points with 11 assists, while guard Brian Chase and forward Renaldo Major tossed in 20 points. Center Chris Alexander contributed a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while forward Marlowe Currie added 11.

The Patroons were paced by forward James Thomas, who scored a game-high 33 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Guard Ronald Thompson tossed in 20 points, and forward Chet Mason added 18 points with 9 rebounds.

Gary left the starting gate quickly, winning the first quarter 30-22. But the Patroons fought back to secure the second quarter 26-25, with the Steelheads retaining a 55-48 lead at half. Gary prevailed in the third quarter 25-23, taking a nine-point lead down the stretch. But different from last night, the Steelheads were able to hold off the Patroons for the victory.

For Gary, it was their 11th win in their last 15 games and their second win on their current road trip. The Steelheads shot the ball well, connecting at a .513 clip from the field and .474 from three point range. Gary missed just two free throws for the evening, hitting 24-of-26. And, different from Thursday night's game, the Steelheads won the boards 40-39.

With the win, the Steelheads improved their quarter point average to 4.03. The Rockford Lightning continue to lead the Eastern Conference of the CBA with a 4.06 quarter point average.

The Steelheads are idle until next Thursday, March 9th, when they travel to Muskegon to face the Michigan Mayhem. The two teams then head to the Genesis Center in Gary for a regular-season-ending rematch on Saturday, March 11th.
