Steelheads Defeat Patroons 105-94, 4-1 Record Tops USBL

GARY, Indiana (April 21,2007) - After suffering their first USBL defeat at the hands of the Kansas Cagerz Thursday night, the Gary Steelheads quickly righted the ship against the Albany Patroons the following night.
Gary placed seven players in double figures, three of them with double-doubles, as the Steelheads defeated the Patroons, 105-94. With the win, Gary improved its league-leading record to 4-1. Albany suffered its first loss of the USBL season, falling to 2-1.
Exhibiting a strong focus after the Kansas defeat, Gary broke to a 27-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Patroons fought back to grab a 57-56 lead on a three-pointer by Marvin Phillips. That lead lasted for 15 seconds, as Steelheads' guard Louis White answered with a 12-footer. But the Patroons again seized the lead at 64-62, following an Antoine Jordan basket. This time they held on for a 73-72 third quarter lead.
With the Patroons still leading, 75-74, Steelheads' guard Eddie Barlow was fouled by Albany's Greg Morton. Barlow hit both foul shots, the beginning of a seven-point surge that put Gary ahead for good.
The Steelheads were paced by guards Steve Lepore and Carl Edwards. Both had season-high efforts of 16 points. Gary had three double-double contributers: Jermaine Blackburn (15 points, 10 rebounds), Marlowe Currie (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Chris Garnett (10 points, 10 rebounds). Adam Schaper added 15 points and Lonnie Randolph contributed 10 points to the victory. Antoine Jordan paced Albany with 19 points, while Lewis Fadipe grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds for the Patroons.
Gary was dominant on the glass, outrebounding Albany 56-37. The Steelheads shot .460 from the field, while holding the Patroons to just .442 for the evening.
The two teams will meet in a rematch at the Genesis Center late Sunday afternoon at 5:00PM CDT.
