Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (May 7, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads continue a six-game road trip Monday night, as they take on the Brooklyn Kings at Long Island University's Metcalfe Hall in Brooklyn. The Steelheads remain in search of their first road victory of the season, despite a 2-2 record for the trip. Gary was awarded two forfeit road victories at Jackson, Mississippi when the Wildcats were expelled from the league.
Gary dropped back-to-back games at Albany on Friday and Saturday night. In the first game, the Steelheads held a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter, only to collapse down the stretch in an 87-81 defeat. The following night, a poor second quarter proved problematic as Gary lost a first-quarter lead and was unable to recover. Albany prevailed, 93-83.
The Steelheads still boast an admirable record on the season at 7-3. They have achieved this, despite the absence of guard Rob Griffin and center Chris Alexander for eight games each due to injuries. The Steelheads also played without forward Jamario Moon for three games, due to a death in his family.
Steelheads' Coach Cliff Levingston recognizes that playing on the road can be hazardous in the USBL, because the games come quickly and it's easy for a team to get out of sync.
"As a coach on the road, you really have to take more control of the game," said Levingston. "A lot of times the guys get out there, and they don't see the forest from the trees. And that's why I'm on the sidelines, so I can see that coming."
The Kings have victory on their mind as well, having lost at Albany 84-78 last Thursday night. Anthony Glover and Greg Plummer paced the Kings with 13 points each. Gordon Klaiber grabbed 14 rebounds in a losing cause.
