Steelheads Break Through For First Road Win, 97-91 at Delaware

GARY, Indiana (May 10, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads ended a three-game losing streak and picked up their first road victory of the year, 97-91 over the Delaware Stars. With the victory, the Steelheads improved to 8-4 on the season, and 3-3 for their road trip. The other two wins were awarded via forfeit against the Jackson Wildcats. The Stars, meantime, remain in search of their first victory.

The Steelheads broke out early, leading 24-14 approaching the end of the first quarter. But then the Stars scored the last seven points of the quarter, pulling back within three points at 24-21. Delaware then took the lead in the second quarter. The Steelheads, courtesy of a steal and score late in the quarter, trailed 48-46 at halftime.

Gary regained the lead early in the third quarter, as Carl Edwards connected on a three pointer, followed by a Chris Garnett post-up basket that gave the Steelheads a 53-50 lead. Baskets by Marlowe Currie, Edwards and Eddie Barlow increased the lead to 59-52. The Steelheads played well down the stretch, winning the fourth quarter by six points.

Guard Carl Edwards paced the Gary attack with 31 points, with forward Jamario Moon adding 21 with a game-high 9 rebounds. Center Chris Garnett was solid with 11 points, while swingman Ray Cunningham added 10 points, Guard Eddie Barlow quarterbacked the team a good portion of the game, handing out a game-high 8 assists.

The Steelheads shot .479 from the field in victory, while holding the Stars to .442 from the field. Gary took the boards, 47-46. Each team committed 17 turnovers.

"Tonight we stayed close enough to steal it at the end," said Steelheads' coach Cliff Levingston after the game. "I kept telling my guys it'll come down to who wants it. We gotta gets stops and we gotta get rebounds. If we get rebounds and stops, we give ourselves a chance."

The Steelheads return home for a Sunday Mother's Day game with the Brooklyn Kings at the Genesis Center. Game time will be 5:00PM CDT.
