
Steeldogs Make Trade to Acquire QB

BIRMINGHAM, AL â The Birmingham Steeldogs have announced that former University of Memphis and Tennessee State quarterback Kenton Evans has been acquired by the Steeldogs in a trade with the Macon Knights for future considerations.
The 6'4", 215 pound QB started in 6 of 11 games with the Memphis Tigers in 1998 and earned Conference USA Co-Player of the Week against Ole Miss when he completed 24 of 39 passes for 215 yards and 1 TD. During his senior season in 2000, Evans was named the ESPN/USA Today Div. 1 AA Player of the Week after throwing for 451 yards and 4 TD's versus Murray State.
Evans has spent the last three seasons in either the AFL or af2. In 2001, Evans was picked up by the AFL's Nashville Cats and was placed on their practice squad. He has appeared in 12 games the last two seasons with four different teams, (Greensboro, Macon, Memphis and Mobile) and has completed 57 of 133 passes for 831 yards and 13 TD's.
USA Today named the Memphis, TN native the Tennessee Player of the Year following his senior season of high school. Evans passed for 10,529 yards and 112 touchdowns during his prep career Westwood High School in Memphis
"Kenton is an experienced quarterback who has played the arena game", said Steeldogs Head Coach Bobby Humphrey. "He has the opportunity to come in and compete for the chance to lead our team this season."
