GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel named their team-elected leadership group for the 2020-2021 season. Erik Middendorf was voted by his teammates as Captain while Jack Babbage, Sean Farrell, Adam Robbins and Mackie Samoskevich were voted as Alternate Captains.
"We are fortunate to announce a group of leaders, led by Erik Middendorf as our Captain, that embody what it means to be a member of the Chicago Steel," said Steel Head Coach Brock Sheahan. "Erik, Adam, Sean, Jack and Mackie are fully bought into our day-to-day approach to get better as both individuals and a team and will have a huge impact in everything we do. We are lucky to have this group leading us this season."
Middendorf, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., is in his second season with the Steel after being acquired by the club on Nov. 6, 2019. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound forward tallied 24 points (12G, 12A) through 32 games with the Steel a season ago, including four game-winning goals.
"We have a lot of great people and players on this team, so it is a huge honor to be named captain of the Steel," said Middendorf. "I'm really excited to see what this team can accomplish this season."
Babbage brings 163 games of USHL experience to the Chicago blueline, the most among players on the Steel roster. The Tully, New York, native netted the first Chicago goal of the 2020-2021 season in the 10-8 loss to the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Saturday.
Farrell, selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 4th Round (#124 Overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, shared the USHL lead with 41 assists during the 2019-2020 campaign, his first with the Steel. Robbins charted 41 points (11G, 30A) through 60 regular-season games during the 2018-2019 season before the team's run to the Clark Cup Final. The 5-foot-8, 154-pound forward made his NCAA debut with Princeton University in the 2019-2020 season and returns to the Steel due to the Ivy League winter sports cancellation.
Samoskevich registered 34 points (13G, 21A) through 47 games in his rookie season in the USHL. The University of Michigan commit was given an 'A' rating on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary watch list for the 2020-2021 season.
