St. Louis Steamers News Release

The St. Louis Steamers had their seven-game winning streak snapped when they lost a 6-4 battle to the Chicago Storm at UIC Pavilion Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped the Steamers to 8-3 while Chicago improves to 4-7. The loss marks the first game this season in which the Steamers failed to score at least five times.

The Steamers got on the board at 6:27 of the first quarter, thanks to an unassisted tally from Jamar Beasley. Chicago tied the game on an unassisted restart goal by Matthew Stewart at 13:17 and the score remained knotted (1-1) as the quarter expired.

A restart goal from Semir Mesanovic 12 seconds into the second quarter gave Chicago a 2-1 lead. The Storm went up by two (3-1), on Mesanovic's second goal, assisted by Mark Ughy, at 5:31 of the second. St. Louis responded on a goal by Randy Soderman, assisted by Shaun David, at 6:57. The Steamers drew even on a restart goal by Genoni Martinez, off a pass from Carlos "Chile" Farias, at 11:02. In the final minute of the first half (14:39), Mesanovic completed the hat trick when he took a pass from Anthony Maher and put a shot past St. Louis goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin. The teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime with the Storm leading, 4-3.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips replaced backup Bayard Elfvin, who had started the game. Chicago increased their lead to 5-3 when Jorge Valle found the back of the net, assisted by Fabinho, at 4:58 of the third. With no further scoring in the period, the Steamers found themselves down by two heading into the final stanza.

The Storm went ahead by three (6-3) on a fourth quarter goal by Novica "Novi" Marojevic. Late in the fourth quarter, with Sterling Wescott in as the sixth attacker for St. Louis, the Steamers inched closer (6-4) on a goal by Mariano Bollella. Chicago managed to hold off any further scoring by St. Louis and the final buzzer sounded with the Storm winning 6-4.

The good news for the Steamers is they finished the weekend the same way they began, 1½ games behind the first-place Milwaukee Wave. The Steamers and the Wave both played two games this weekend and both teams split. Following next Friday's contest in Milwaukee, the Steamers will journey west to visit the California Cougars Saturday, January 21 at 9:30 p.m.

The next home game for the Steamers is Tuesday, January 24 when they host the Baltimore Blast at 7:35 p.m. at Savvis Center.
