St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - A familiar team has been notified by the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) that three of their players are being honored as MISL Players of the Week. The St. Louis Steamers' Shaun David wins the Offensive Player of the Week, Mali Walton takes home the Defensive Player of the Week and Brett Phillips repeats as the Goalkeeper of the Week.
Shaun David, 24, becomes the second consecutive St. Louis Steamers to win Offensive Player of the Week. Joe Reiniger was presented with the award last Monday. David scored three goals, including the game winner, in the Steamers 6-5 victory over the California Cougars on Thursday, Dec. 22nd. The Oakland, CA native is in his second season with the Steamers and third in the MISL. He was named to the MISL All-Rookie Team following the 2003-04 season. He's on pace to eclipse his 2004-05 totals of 15 goals and seven assists in 30 games in the 2004-05 season, having jumped out of the gates with a team-leading nine goals and three assists through eight appearances in 2005-06. He ranks third in the MISL in goals, trailing only Milwaukee's Greg Howes and Baltimore's Giuliano Celenza, who each have 10.
Mali Walton wins his first MISL Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts in the Steamers' triumph over California. Walton contributed two blocks to help an already stingy defense. The Steamers allowed only 16 shots, which were three below their league leading total of 19.1 per game. Walton, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound, defender from Flint, Mich., is 33 years old, and is in his third season as a Steamer. He had missed the team's previous two games with a leg injury.
Brett Phillips has been the most decorated member of the Steamers so far this season. Phillips takes home his third Goalkeeper of the Week Award for the 2005-06 season following on the heels of winning the award last week (Dec. 19) and also on Nov. 28th. Today also marks Phillips's birthday. The Tampa, FL native turns 37 today. Earlier this month, Phillips's backup, Bayard Elfvin, also won the MISL honor on Dec. 12th. Phillips's effort in the victory over California last week helped the streaking Steamers win their fifth consecutive game and improve their record to 6-2. They trail the league leading Milwaukee Wave (7-0) by only a game and a half. Phillips turned away 9 of the 13 shots he faced in the win and the 37 year old improved his record to 5-2 with a 4.95 goals against average and a 62.6 save percentage.
The Steamers next game will be on Thursday, December 22 at Savvis Center at 7:35 pm. They will play host to the Chicago Storm for the first time. In their last meeting, the Steamers defeated the Storm, 7-5 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL.
