March 30, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS - Thursday's 10:35 a.m. start proved to be a bit early for the Steamers as they suffered their first loss of the season at Savvis Center by the final of 4-3 to the Philadelphia KiXX. It was the first time the season that Philadelphia defeated St. Louis. Coming into the game, the Steamers were a perfect 12-0 in their home building, but had also had already wrapped up the Regular Season Championship and the number one seed in the MISL Championship Series, ensuring home-field advantage throughout the post-season. With that in mind, Head Coach Omid Namazi rested regulars Shaun David, D.J. Newsom, Sandre Naumoski and goalkeeper Brett Phillips.
Despite the loss of those players, the rest of the Steamers came out sluggish and gave up more scoring chances in the first quarter and were out shot 5-2. The game was scoreless after one. The KiXX started the scoring in the second quarter with goals by Drew Kopp and Ptah Myers. The Steamers countered with two goals from midfielder Jamar Beasley to tie the score going into halftime.
Former MVP Dino Delevski scored a power play goal for Philadelphia to give them the lead, only to squander it by giving up an equalizing goal to Jeff DiMaria late in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw a defensive struggle as neither team could find the net, but Joshua Rife beat keeper Bayard Elfvin to give the KiXX the lead and the win. It was the eighth win on the season for Philadelphia.
The Steamers now hit the road to take on the Baltimore Blast at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore tomorrow night. St. Louis has lost each of their other two games at 1st Mariner. They will also play Saturday afternoon at Savvis beginning at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Milwaukee Wave. The Steamers will honor Daryl Doran during halftime with a ceremony to retire his number.
