St. Louis Steamers News Release
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 9, 2005 - The Steamers defeated the Chicago Storm 7-6 on Sunday night at Savvis Center and are now a half game in first place in the MISL. Aaron Susi notched the game-winning goal late in the fourth quarter after Daryl Doran beat three Storm defenders and fed Susi for the winner.
The Steamers would not lead at all in the game until the end. Chicago scored two goals in the first quarter on goals by Novica Marojevic, one of which was a shootout goal. St. Louis responded with two goals in the second quarter, both shorthanded by Matt Caution and Jeff DiMaria. However, the Storm came back with two goals by Matthew Stewart and Gus Karteroulots and would lead 4-2 at the half.
The Steamers opened the third quarter with a blast by Ibrahim Kante on a re-start goal to cut the lead to 4-3. Marojevic put Chicago up by two goals again when he recorded a hat-trick at 3:16 of the third. St. Louis would score two more goals in the quarter on tallies by Joe Reiniger and Randy Soderman and the Storm would add one by Jorge Valle to hold the lead to 6-5 at the end of three.
DiMaria would tie the game at 6-6 on the powerplay when he took a pass from Reiniger at the side of the net and he put it by Storm goalkeeper Danny Waltman. Both teams had valuable chances at both ends and Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips made key saves to keep the game tied. In the last minute of the game, Doran powered his way through three defenders on the right wing and found Susi alone at the top of the box and he would beat the goalkeeper with 18 seconds remaining in the game.
St. Louis extends their record to 11-5 and also their winning streak to three games. The Steamers will travel to Cleveland on Friday Jan. 14 to take on the Force at 6:35 p.m. and they will also play the following night on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Kansas City to take on the Comets at 7:35 p.m.
