March 18, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
The St. Louis Steamers improved their record to 18-5 with a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Kixx (6-17) Saturday night before 5,625 fans at Wachovia Spectrum. St. Louis is 5-0 against Philadelphia this season. The first place Steamers are 8-2 in their last ten games. With a berth in the MISL playoffs already clinched, the Steamers are now driving towards securing home field advantage in the postseason. That advantage could be huge for the Steamers, who are 11-0 at Savvis Center with four regular season home games remaining.
St. Louis scored first when Damien Pottinger netted his first goal as a member of the Steamers, off a pass from Mike Apple, at 7:11 of the first quarter. The Steamers went up by two when Apple scored off a pass from Justin McMillian at 12:19 and the opening frame ended with St. Louis on top, 2-0.
Philadelphia got on the scoreboard at 1:09 of the second quarter on a goal by Vlatko Andonovski, assisted by Gary DePalma. The Kixx drew even (2-2) on an unassisted tally by Ptah Myers at 11:18. St. Louis regained the lead at 12:31 on a goal by Genoni Martinez, assisted by Jeff DiMaria, and the first half ended with the Steamers on top 3-2.
St. Louis started the scoring in the second half and increased their lead to 4-2 when Elvir Kafedzic scored, assisted by Sterling Wescott, at 7:12 of the third stanza. Kafedzic's goal would prove to be the game-winner. Philadelphia answered at 9:38 when David Schofield headed the ball into the net (unassisted) to make the score 4-3.
St. Louis wasted no time getting the scoring started in the fourth quarter as Apple, positioned in front of the yellow line, sent a long shot past Kixx goalkeeper Peter Pappas just 29 seconds into the period to regain a two-goal advantage for the Steamers (5-3). St. Louis increased their lead to three (6-3) on an unassisted tally by Sterling Wescott at 5:10. McMillian scored the final goal of the match, assisted by Pottinger, at 7:32 for the 7-3 St. Louis victory.
Brett Phillips earned the win in goal for the Steamers, improving his league-best record to 16-4. Phillips faced 20 shots and made 17 saves. Peter Pappas took the loss in goal for the Kixx, dropping his record to 6-15. Pappas made nine saves on 16 shots faced.
In an unusual occurrence for professional indoor soccer, there were no power play goals, no power plays, no restart goals and no penalties in the game. Twenty-two fouls were called by officials, with 13 going against Philadelphia and 9 against St. Louis.
The Steamers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they tangle with the Chicago Storm at 4:00 p.m. in Chicago. Sunday's game and all remaining Steamers' games this season can be heard on KFNS THE FAN 590-AM radio or via internet webcast at kfns.com.
