Steamers Open Playoffs With A Win

The St. Louis Steamers kicked off the MISL Championship Series with a 7-1 victory on the road by defeating the Chicago Storm Saturday night at UIC Pavilion. Action shifts to St. Louis for game two of the two-game series when the Steamers host the Storm next Saturday, April 22 at 7:05 p.m. at Savvis Center. If the teams split the two games, a "Golden Goal" sudden-death period will be played immediately following the conclusion of game two.

Shaun David put St. Louis on the scoreboard first with an unassisted tally at 5:25 of the opening stanza. Carlos "Chile" Farias put the Steamers on top, 2-0, when he scored without an assist at 9:41.

St. Louis took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter and increased it to three on a goal by Mike Apple, assisted by Jeff DiMaria, at 10:20. Apple's goal was the only one of the quarter and the Steamers led 3-0 at halftime.

The third quarter went scoreless until the 12:35 mark, when Jamar Beasley's unassisted goal increased the Steamers' lead to 4-0. With no other scoring in the period, St. Louis entered the final stanza with a 4-0 shutout intact.

Chicago got on the board at 2:37 of the fourth quarter on a goal by Mark Ughy, assisted by Fabinho, but it was all Steamers from that point on. St. Louis responded with three consecutive goals to seal the victory. Apple got his second goal of the night, assisted by Beasley, at 8:19. Shaun David scored his second of the contest, assisted by DiMaria, at 9:17. D.J. Newsom scored the final goal of the game on a restart at 12:44, assisted by Genoni Martinez

In the other semifinal series, the Milwaukee Wave open their series against the Baltimore Blast next Saturday, April 22 at 7:05 p.m. in Baltimore with game two the following day at 6:05 p.m. in Milwaukee. The winner of the semifinal series between St. Louis and Chicago will square off with the winner of the Baltimore-Milwaukee series in the MISL Championship Series Finals the last weekend of this month. The deciding game of the MISL Championship Series Finals will be televised live over ESPN2 on Sunday, April 30 at noon (CDT).
