St. Louis Steamers News Release

ST. LOUIS - For the fourth consecutive week, a member of the St. Louis Steamers has been awarded the MISL Defensive of the Week. In this go around, D.J. Newsom is the recipient following his performance in the Steamers 10-4 rout over the Milwaukee Wave Friday (Jan. 13th) night. Newsom scored a goal in his second consecutive game giving the team a 7-3 lead at the time of his goal.

While Newsom was awarded with the honor, it can almost be given as a collective award to the entire Steamers defense. With Joe Reiniger serving as Head Coach while Omid Namazi sat out with a suspension, the team rallied around their defense and stifled the high scoring Wave. Newsom, 27 and sixth year indoor soccer professional, assisted in an incredible defensive effort that limited the Milwaukee offense to a season-low eight shots on goal, which enabled goalkeeper Brett Phillips to score a victory with only four saves. The win put St. Louis only a half a game out of first place. The following day, the Wave were defeated in overtime by the Chicago Storm, placing the Steamers in a first place tie with Milwaukee.

Newsom is a St. Louis native who graduated from Rosary High School in 1996 and was a first-team all-state selection as a senior. He was a four-year starter at Quincy (Ill.) University, before beginning his professional indoor career in St. Louis in 2000. He played one season with the Cleveland Force (2002-03) before returning to St. Louis the following season. In 2004-05, Newsom played 28 games for the Steamers, with nine goals, three assists and 25 blocks. This season, in 13 games, he has three goals, one assist, and leads the team with 13 blocks for St. Louis. The three previous Defensive Players of the Week on the Steamers were Mali Walton (Dec. 27th), Randy Soderman (Jan. 2nd) and Genoni Martinez (Jan. 9th)

The first place Steamers' next game will be their fourth consecutive on the road, in Stockton, California Saturday night at 9:30pm CT when they take on the California Cougars. Their next game in Savvis Center is Tuesday, January 24th against the Baltimore Blast at 7:35pm CT.
