Steamers Defeat Comets 11-5

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 2, 2005 - The St. Louis Steamers beat the visiting Kansas City Comets 11-5 on Wednesday night in front of 5,124 at Savvis Center. The win puts the Steamers in a first place tie with the Philadelphia Kixx.

The Steamers scored a season-high eight goals in the first half. Sterling Wescott opened the scoring for St. Louis on an unassisted goal at 3:34 of the first quarter. The Comets' Anthony Maher tied the score just two and half minutes later on an assist from Dino Delevski which would be Kansas City's only goal of the half. Shaun David, D.J. Newsom and Randy Soderman each tallied goals for the Steamers in the first quarter and the score was 4-1 at the end of one.

St. Louis followed up with four more goals in the second quarter. Soderman scored his second goal of the game on a Daryl Doran re-start attempt just 29 seconds into the quarter. Newsom and Wescott would also notch their second goals of the game in the quarter and Jeff DiMaria scored on the powerplay on an assist from Doran. David would record two assists in the quarter and the Steamers led 8-1 at the end of the half.

St. Louis opened the third quarter scoring when David scored his second goal of the game at 3:56 to push the lead to 9-1. Kansas City's Maher scored his second goal of the game on an assist from Justin Evans at 5:17. A minute later, David registered a hat-trick and his fifth point of the game when he headed in a pass from Wescott. The Comets added another goal when Maher notched his third goal of the game at 13:52 of the third quarter. Addae Rique scored at the 3:00 mark of the fourth quarter and Kansas City recorded two more goals to make the final score 11-5.

St. Louis is now 14-9 and in a first place tie with Philadelphia. Brett Phillips was the winning goalkeeper for the Steamers and improved his record to 10-7 and Sanaldo received the loss for the Comets and his record is now 4-4. St. Louis will play back-to-back games this weekend when they visit Milwaukee on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. and fly to Baltimore to take on the Blast at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, which can be seen on KPLR-TV WB 11.
