Steamers Bounce Back For Tenth Win Of Season

January 22, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

The Steamers overcame a three-goal deficit to win their tenth game of the season when they defeated the California Cougars 7-5 at the Stockton Arena Saturday night. The win puts the 10-3 Steamers one-half game behind the 11-3 Milwaukee Wave, who won both their games this weekend. The Steamers are 4-0 against the Cougars, who dropped to 1-13 on the season.

The Steamers lit up the scoreboard first when Carlos "Chile" Farias scored with an assist going to Mariano Bollella, at 3:08 of the opening stanza. California midfielder Brian Farber tied things up and the quarter ended with the score knotted.

Cougars midfielder Gary Brooks started the second quarter with back-to-back goals to give California a 3-1 lead. Enrique Tovar scored the third in a row for California when he headed in a goal, assisted by Vicente Figueroa, to increase the Cougars' lead to 4-1. St. Louis cut California's lead to 4-2 when Sterling Wescott scored off an assist from Farias and the first half expired with the Cougars enjoying a two-goal lead. In a stellar display of soccer fundamentals, St. Louis defender Randy Soderman followed up on the rebound of his own blocked shot and put it past California goalkeeper Jim Larkin to move the Steamers (3-4) to within one of the Cougars. St. Louis drew even (4-4) on a goal from Sandre Naumoski before the third quarter ended.

St. Louis took a 7-4 lead in the fourth quarter thanks to goals from Mali Walton, Elvir Kafedzic and Soderman's second of the night. Tovar was credited with a goal that deflected off Walton late in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late for California as the Steamers held on to seal the 7-5 victory.

Brett Phillips took the win in goal for the Steamers. He is now 9-2 on the season. Jim Larkin took the loss for California, dropping his record to 1-9.
