Stealth Collecting Holiday Toys for Seattle Children's Hospital

EVERETT, Wash. -- It's the holiday season and the Washington Stealth are all about bringing joy through toys to kids that are hospitalized and away from home this December.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Stealth are getting behind "Turner's Toy Drive" to collect toys for oncology patients at Seattle Children's Hospital.

Now in its sixth year, "Turner's Toy Drive" is organized by 15-year-old Stealth lacrosse fan and leukemia survivor Turner Patterson of Monroe.

The Monroe High School freshman who beat blood cancer twice - at age five and again at nine, recently passed the critical five-year anniversary of being declared in remission of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) following a bone marrow transplant in 2007 at Seattle Children's. ALL is one of the most common forms of blood cancer among adolescents and is considered one of the most survivable for young people.

"Christmas-time was difficult for Turner when he was hospitalized for blood cancer treatments," said Travis Patterson, Turner's father, who spent several holidays away from home while his son during treatment. "Knowing what it's like for kids who are hospitalized during Christmas was hard for Turner. The toy drive has become Turner's way of bringing joy to other children that have to spend the holidays in the hospital."

With the help of members of IBEW Local 191, Turner and his father have annually collected new toys and delivered them to Seattle Children's just in time for the holidays. In 2011, they collected enough toys to pack seven SUVs of friends and neighbors. This year they hope the community's generosity will help them fill over 10.

To join the Stealth in contributing to Turner's Toy Drive, the public is asked to add just one new or unwrapped toy (toddlers to teens) to their holiday shopping list and bring it to Everett's Comcast Arena (2200 Hewitt Ave) by Friday, Dec. 7. Turner's Toy Drive collection boxes are set up at the arena's Community Ice Rink and the Stealth offices.

The Stealth and Turner will deliver the toys to Seattle Children's Hospital in time for Christmas.
