San Jose Stealth News Release
The San Jose Stealth grabbed a share of 1st place in the National Lacrosse League's West division with a 12-8 flattening of the Colorado Mammoth in the game of the week at sold-out Pepsi Center in Denver.
In a showdown between the two West Division rivals, the Stealth victory ties them with Colorado at 5-3 at the midway point in the NLL season. With Sirius Satellite Radio broadcasting nationally for the game of the week, the Stealth silenced a boisterous crowd by scoring six of seven goals between the second and third quarters.
San Jose also squashed a burgeoning Colorado uprising in the fourth after the Stealth took a 10-5 lead. The Mammoth scored three quick goals that prompted roars from the crowd after Colorado replaced starting goalie Gee Nash. With the game tightening, the Stealth rebounded with a steely goal from team captain Colin Doyle up top to lurch the Stealth back into a three-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter. Then Stealth leading scorer, Jeff Zywicki, sent fans streaming to the exits early with a goal and a 12-8 San Jose lead with over four minutes to play.
The second half the season favors the Stealth, who will play five of their last eight at home, while the Mammoth go on the road for six on of their last eight. However, the Stealth appear very comfortable away from San Jose, with a 4-1 road record.
The Stealth are surging, winning three in a row, and fourth of their last five, while the Mammoth have lost three straight after a 5-0 start. Part of the Stealth's resurgence is the steadying play of goalie Anthony Cosmo, who was brilliant against Colorado with 39 saves. Cosmo's rocky beginning to the season included two benchings, but now, the 2007 Goalie of the Year is once again on top of his game.
"It was the defense in front of me," Cosmo said. "They couldn't get off any quality shots." Ebullient Stealth coach Walt Christianson said, "That's Anthony Cosmo just being Anthony Cosmo. He's one of the best goaltenders in the world." The Stealth play Friday in Philadelphia before returning home to play the Calagary on March
