State College Spikes News Release
-SPIKES START PAIR WITH JAMMERS: The State College Spikes make their first trip to Russell Diethrick Park this year as they meet the Jamestown Jammers for the first game of a two-game set. The Spikes look to get back to .500 on the year and jump back into third place in the Pinckney Division with a win. The Jammers lead the all-time series, 19-14, and have won 8 of 15 games at Diethrick Park.
-LAST NIGHT: Justin Byler and David Rubinstein delivered back-to-back doubles in the 11th inning as the State College Spikes took advantage of an Auburn Doubledays error to win, 7-4. Kevin Nolan's two-out error in the 11th allowed Byler and Rubinstein to knock in what proved to be the winning runs. Rubinstein went 3-for-6, and added his first home run of the year, a sixth-inning solo shot to left field.
-SPIKES SEND IRWIN TO MOUND: Right-hander Phillip Irwin gets the start for State College tonight. The 21st round draft pick out of the University of Mississippi has allowed just one run on the season thus far in six total appearances. Irwin made his first pro start against Jamestown on July 10, going four scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. The Colliersville, TN native tied the Spikes season high for strikeouts in a season last time out, with seven in four innings of work against Lowell on July 21.
-JAMMERS GO WITH ROBERTS: Right-hander Josh Roberts will get the ball tonight for Jamestown. Roberts struck out six Batavia batters in six scoreless innings in his last appearance, but came away without a decision. The Marlins' 35th-round draft pick in 2007, Roberts last faced the Spikes on July 12 of this year, taking the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over four innings of work.
-SILVA JOINS VAN SLYKE IN RECORD BOOK: Carlos Silva joined A.J. Van Slyke as the only Spikes with three doubles in one game on Monday night. Van Slyke accomplished the feat on July 21, 2006 at Oneonta. Silva was also on deck for the final out of the ninth, just one hit shy of the single-game record for base hits, set by Ciro Rosero with five on August 8, 2008.
