Stars Win Second Straight, 8-7

July 17, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Mobile, AL – A night after recording 12 hits in a 6-2 win, Huntsville's previously slumping offense pumped out 14 more on route to an 8-7 win over Mobile on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. With their second straight victory, the Stars (13-10) stayed within a half-game of Southern League West second-half leader Birmingham.

The see-saw affair took over three hours to complete, and Huntsville held leads of 3-1, 5-4 and 8-6. The Bay Bears enjoyed 1-0, 4-3 and 6-5 advantages, and by the time the fifth inning was finished, the teams had already combined for 13 runs and 21 hits. Finally, the bullpens stemmed the tide, and a pair of Stars relievers atoned for letting a lead slip away in the series opener.

Brian Adams and Matt Parker pitched in the ninth inning Monday, each charged with a run as Mobile rallied for a walk-off win, 2-1. On Wednesday, they rebounded to combine for five solid innings after starter Pedro Liriano surrendered six runs, five earned, on nine hits and one walk in four frames. Adams (2-1) notched his second win, permitting just one hit and one walk while fanning two over two innings, and Parker nailed down his sixth save, giving up one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings.

"They had something to prove after the other night," Stars pitching coach Stan Kyles said. "I was really pleased with how they performed tonight.

The Stars' offense roughed up Bears starter Roger Deago (6-6), who suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Huntsville clean-up hitter Corey Hart continued to put a recent slump behind him. Hart finished 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Brandon Gemoll stayed hot, ripping a double and single, driving in one and scoring another. Kade Johnson doubled, singled, drove in two and scored one, and Daryl Clark went 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs batted in and one run scored. Ryan Gripp has a hit in each of his last four pinch-hit appearances, this time singling to drive in a run.

Huntsville sends righty Ben Hendrickson (4-1, 2.25) to the mound in Thursday's series finale. The Bears counter with righty Chris Rojas (). Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-Game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on Jammin' 1550 WLOR, ESPN 1450 WTKI and at www.huntsvillestars.com.
