Huntsville Stars News Release

Huntsville, AL – The Stars needed one like this. Coming off its first win since May 15, Huntsville pounded out 12 hits and led West Tenn, 12-2, after just five innings Saturday night. The Jaxx scored seven in the sixth to make it interesting, but Huntsville's bullpen locked down a 13-9 victory at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars' second straight win pushed their lead to 1½ games over Birmingham in the Southern League West.

Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, Huntsville wasted no time reaching Jaxx starter Angel Guzman, the Chicago Cubs' top pitching prospect. After Ryan Knox reached on an error, Dave Krynzel's ground ball forced Knox out at second. Krynzel then swiped one of his four stolen bases, and Richard Paz drew a walk. Krynzel and Paz pulled off a double steal, and Corey Hart singled in two runs. A pair of walks loaded the bases, and Chris Barnwell's infield single plated Hart for a 3-2 Stars lead.

In the second, Knox led off with a double and took third on Krynzel's single. Krynzel stole second, then Paz's sacrifice fly scored Knox and pushed Krynzel to third. Hart knocked in Krynzel with a double to dead centerfield, the second of his four hits in the game. Chris Barnwell ripped a third-inning solo homer to make it 6-2, Huntsville.

The Stars tacked on two more against Guzman in the fourth, as Krynzel led off with an infield single and stole second. Paz drew a walk and Hart doubled home Krynzel. Brandon Gemoll grounded to third with the infield in, then Daryl Clark walked to load the bases. Mike Kremblas' walk forced in Paz for an 8-2 lead.

Huntsville made it five straight frames scoring at least one run. In the bottom of the fifth, Knox was hit by a pitch, then Paz and Hart singled to load the bases. Facing reliever T.P. Waligora, Gemoll sent a searing drive over the rightfield wall for a grand slam homerun that put the Stars up, 12-2.

Pedro Liriano (4-4) picked up his fourth win, giving up two runs on just four hits and two walks with one strikeout over five innings. Guzman (0-2) suffered his second loss, surrendering eight runs, six earned, on eight hits and four walks in three-plus innings. Stars reliever Brian Adams permitted seven runs, five earned, on six hits and two walks while retiring two batters in the sixth. Matt Parker got the final out of the sixth and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing one hit and fanning three. Mike Adams gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth.

Huntsville sends Derek Lee (4-2, 3.25) to the mound against Jaxx righty Travis Anderson (1-1, 5.06) in game three of the series Sunday at 2:05 p.m. There will be a concert following the game at Joe Davis Stadium. Out of Eden will perform, presented by Touch the World, WOCG 90.1 FM and Madison Mission Church.
