Traverse City North Stars News Release
BOARDMAN, OH. - It's a long way to travel for the Traverse City North Stars to take on their cross-state rivals from Alpena, but Saturday's NAHL North Division Showcase contest was home sweet home for a little less than three hours at the Boardman IceZone in suburban Youngstown, Ohio.
Marc Thompson (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) levied an even-strength marker with 11:29 to play, giving Traverse City a 3-2 triumph over the IceDiggers on the second day of the three-day event. Josh Miller (Trenton, MI/Trenton HS) scored his third goal of the season with 4:13 to go in the first period, Nate Urbaniak (Perrysburg, OH/TC North Stars) put TC ahead 2-1 at 10:40 of the middle stanza, and netkeep C.J. Motte (St. Clair, MI/Honeybaked AAA) and the Stars' defensive unit kept the Diggers from lighting the lamp over the final 29 minutes, setting up Thompson's winner.
Motte wasn't busy, stopping 15 of 17 shots, but upped his personal mark to 7-2-1 and pared his goals-against average to 2.48. Four North Stars players - David Johnstone, Kyle Bonis, Jarrod LaBelle, and Sean Burke each recorded an assist in the victory. Traverse City improved to 14-3-3 and face off against defending NAHL champion St. Louis in the Showcase finale on Sunday at 11 a.m.
