Traverse City North Stars News Release

KALAMAZOO - Every time the Traverse City North Stars surged ahead in Saturday's series-opening matinee at Kalamazoo, the Jr. K-Wings had an answer. Three times, the Stars seized a one-goal advantage, and three times the hosts knotted the contest again, the final equalizer coming with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Traverse City got the last word, however, scoring with its final two shooters to claim a 4-3 shootout victory at Wings West Arena.

Sean Murphy (Cary, NC/Tri-City USHL) had a goal and an assist to pace the North Stars, while Kyle Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) stopped 35 shots plus the final four of the shootout session. After three straight misses, Kyle Froese (Traverse City, MI/TC Central HS) and Michal Toman (Prievidza, Slovakia/TC North Stars NAHL) converted the Stars' final two chances.

Traverse City improved to 26-16-5, and closed to within seven points of second-place Kalamazoo in the NAHL North Division standings in the chase for the final home-ice slot in the opening round of the playoffs.

Will Badner (Cadillac, MI/Motor City NAHL) scored just 17 seconds into a TC power play at 8:23 of the opening period on an assist from Murphy, who potted an unassisted marker near the midway point of the second. Mitchell Snider (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars NAHL/Manhattanville College) fed captain Jared Van Wormer (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) with 8:23 to play in the third stanza before the Wings' late-game flatfooter.

The teams will close out the weekend - and regular season - series on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo. Face-off is slated for 2 p.m.
