San Antonio Stars News Release

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the organization announced today. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are thrilled to have Dan Hughes as the leader of the San Antonio Stars for years to come," said RC Buford, President of Sports Franchises for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "'For the past decade he's provided great stability and consistency to the Stars organization and our community as an excellent coach and leader. The future of the Stars organization remains bright with Coach Hughes at the helm."

Hughes first joined the Stars as head coach in 2005 prior to taking over general manager duties as well the following season. As the winningest coach in franchise history, Hughes has amassed 146 wins in nine seasons. He has led the Stars to seven playoff appearances in the last eight seasons, including a trip to the WNBA Finals in 2008. In his 13 years as a WNBA head coach, Hughes has amassed 222 wins - second all-time in WNBA history behind Mike Thibault - and is the league's all-time leader in games coached (456).

"I look forward to the future with the San Antonio Stars and am honored that Spurs Sports and Entertainment wants me to continue to serve as general manager and head coach after 10 years," said Hughes. "Long term relationships are so rare in pro sports, so I feel extremely fortunate."

The longest tenured active coach in the league, Hughes is the only head coach in WNBA history to take three different franchises - San Antonio, Cleveland and Charlotte - to the playoffs. He has guided his teams to 11 playoff appearances in 14 total seasons, including guiding the Stars to a 24-10 mark in 2008, earning the best record in the league, the Western Conference title and the franchise's first trip to the WNBA Finals. Additionally, Hughes has been named WNBA Coach of the Year twice (2001, 2007).

During Hughes' tenure, Stars players have earned 14 WNBA All-Star nods, eight All-WNBA First and Second Team honors, five All-WNBA Rookie Team selections, five WNBA All-Defensive team honors and three Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Awards.

Over 40 of Hughes' former players and assistants have gone on to coach at the high school, collegiate and professional level, including three current WNBA head coaches in the Western Conference and two full-time NBA assistants.

Hughes also serves as a member of the five-person USA Basketball Selection Committee - which selected the gold-medal winning teams for the 2010 and 2014 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games.
