New Mexico Stars News Release
The 5-5 New Mexico Stars traveled to Amarillo to take on the league leading 8-2 Amarillo Venom, but couldn't hold them off as the Stars fall by a score of 88-72. The highlight of the night for the Stars came in the 2nd quarter as LB Markus Cortez picked off Venom QB Nate Davis and return the ball 37 yards for a touchdown. "We watched film all last week, and had a plan for me going into this one" Cortez said after the game. "The coaches put me in the right spot and I was there when it counted. But, I'd trade that interception and touchdown right now if it meant we could have won that game. Losing is something I will never get used to."On offense the Stars were able to put up a well rounded scoring attack as every one of the offensive players scored in this one; Roland Bruno (1 receiving and a 2-point conversion), Dexter Manley (3 receiving), Joshua Floyd (1 rushing and 2 receiving), Seth Smith (1 rushing), Kasey Peters (1 rushing and 6 passing), and even LB Landrick Brody came in at RB to run one in for a touchdown. The Stars end the regular season at home on Monday, July 1st against the 1-10 San Angelo Bandits at 7:05PM. It's Fan Appreciation Night and the first 500 fans will receive a Stars team poster, courtesy of the Santa Ana Star Casino. The Stars are a perfect 3-0 against the Bandits this season and will look to fine tune things before the LSFL playoffs begin.
