Stars Fall to Venom 56-54
June 9, 2013 - Lone Star Football League (LSFL)
New Mexico Stars News Release
With 2,400 fans in attendance the New Mexico Stars hosted the Amarillo Venom in an attempt to second 2nd place in the LSFL with a win. With the game winding down, and seconds remaining, the Stars lined up for a FG attempt trailing 56-54. The ball is snapped, the kick is blocked, and the Stars fall to 4-5 on the season.
For a second straight game QB Kasey Peters put up huge numbers as he threw for 321 yards and 7 TDs. Peters did an excellent job spreading the ball around as Joshua Floyd and Dexter Manley each had 9 receptions, with Roland Bruno hauling in 5 of his own. Floyd finished with a team high 137 yards, but it was Manley who caught the crowd's attention as he reeled in 4 touchdowns to go along with his 99 yards receiving. Bruno had 85 yards and 2 TDs on the night.
On defense it was LB Landrick Brody who came up with a crucial fumble recovery in the waning seconds that set up the game-winning FG attempt. Brody finished the game with 3.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.
There was a scary moment in the 1st quarter as LB Markus Cortez suffered an injury on the field and remained on the ground for several minutes, holding his right arm and shoulder in pain. He would eventually get off the field under his own power and returned to the game in the 2nd quarter. Cortez finished with a team-high 4.5 tackles.
The Stars are still in the playoff picture for the LSFL this season and will host the Abilene Bombers on Saturday June 15th. It will be Fathers Day theme night, and the first 200 hundred fathers who arrive to the game will receive a special gift courtesy of the New Mexico Stars. It will also be cheap beer night as a token of appreciation for the dads. All Fathers will be recognized during the game.
