Huntsville Stars News Release
Huntsville, AL-The Mobile BayBears defeated the Huntsville Stars 4-2 in extra innings Saturday night which completed a suspended game from the night before.
Saturday's game resumed in the bottom of the fifth after rain had forced the game to stop Friday night.
The game was scheduled for seven innings as part of a doubleheader. With the game scoreless in the sixth, Mobile got a leadoff single from Tom Belza. The next batter Jake Lamb then crushed a two-run homer to right field against RHP Jose De La Torre giving the BayBears a 2-0 lead.
The Stars rallied in their sixth inning against Mobile closer Jake Barrett(1-2). With two on and two out, Nick Ramirez laced a two-run double to left centerfield scoring Kentrail Davis and Josh Prince. Ramirez's twelfth double of the year tied the game at 2-2.
The game went into extra innings with the game tied at 2-2 after neither team could score in the seventh.
In the top of the eighth inning the Stars had their closer David Goforth(2-3) on the mound. After he struck Belza out to begin the inning, the BayBears got back to back singles from Lamb and Dustin Martin.
With runners on the corners and with one out, Goforth struck out Jon Griffin.
The BayBears then brought in a pinch hitter for the pitcher's spot. Raywilly Gomez lined a two-run single off a diving Mitch Haniger's glove in right field which scored a pair of runs. Gomez's two-run single gave the BayBears a 4-2 lead.
Caleb Fleck earned his second save of the year for Mobile in the bottom of the eighth. With the tying runner at the plate, he struck out Ramirez to end the game.
Barrett collected the win for the BayBears who improve to 36-24. Goforth suffered the loss out of the Stars bullpen who are now 40-21.
The BayBears and Stars were attempting to play the second game of their doubleheader after game one, however a heavy downpour forced game two to be postponed until Sunday.
The BayBears lead the Stars 1-0 in their five game series. The series will resume Sunday with another doubleheader. In game one, RHP Drew Gagnon(4-2, 2.50) will get the ball for Huntsville. Mobile will have RHP Bradin Hagens(4-2, 2.89) on the hill. Sunday's doubleheader can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 1:45 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM WTKI and online at www.wtkiradio.com.
