Stars Drop Fourth Straight, 12-6

Zebulon, NC – Carolina scored six in the first and rolled to a 12-6 victory over Huntsville on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The Stars have lost four in a row to fall 2½ games behind Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half race.

The Mudcats banged out 18 hits, equaling the most hits against the Stars this season. Six different players recorded multi-hit games. Chris Aguila's 3-for-5 performance led the charge. Aguila tripled and singled twice, driving in three and scoring one. Chris Ashby went 2-for-5 with two singles, two runs batted in and one run scored. Ryan Jorgenson ripped two singles, knocked in two and scored two more. Billy Hall delivered two hits, stole a base, scored two and drove in one, and Jesus Medrano rapped two singles and scored two runs.

Brad Nelson paced Huntsville's attack with three hits in five at-bats. He matched a Stars season-high set by teammate J.J. Hardy in the first week of the season, hammering three doubles in the game. Nelson also scored two runs. Noochie Varner finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, one run batted in and one run scored. Brandon Gemoll walked twice, including once to force in a run, and drilled a sacrifice fly to center for another run batted in.

Ryan Baker (5-2) picked up the win in relief for Carolina, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks while fanning four over 3 1/3 innings. Starter Jeff Housman (3-2) suffered the loss for Huntsville, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Franklyn Gracesqui picked up his fifth save, allowing only one hit batter over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Reliever Dave Nolasco tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings for the Stars, permitting three hits and fanning two.

Huntsville righty Ben Hendrickson (2-2, 4.00) meets Cats right-hander Trevor Hutchinson (2-2, 3.28) in Sunday's series finale. Game time is 1:00 p.m. CT.
