Stars call of the Bombers by a score of 61-58

June 16, 2013 - Lone Star Football League (LSFL)
New Mexico Stars News Release

The New Mexico Stars took the field in their camouflage jerseys as the team honored our military, and did their duty as they shot down the Abilene Bombers with a score of 61-58. The hero of the game was Zeke Arevalo, who put a kick through the goal posts as time expired to secure the win. If you remember, it was just last week that the Stars lost on a last second field goal attempt that was blocked, so a win this week was complete and total redemption for the team as a whole.

After the game Arevalo said "I try and have a short memory. Ya, it's in the back of your mind, but I tell myself every time to just keep my head down and follow through." That's great advice for a man that is sitting on top of the world after a huge win that brings the team back to a .500 record (5-5) and locks them into 3rd place this season in the LSFL.

On offense it was again Kasey Peters who filled the stat sheet up with his 312 yards passing, 7 TDs and no INTs. Peters' go-to man all night long was Roland Bruno who finished the game with 9 catches for 122 yards (both game highs) and a touchdown. Bruno made more than a field highlight catches and broke a few tackles to gain some much needed YAC (Yards After Catch). Dexter Manley came through big with 3 more TDs and 96 yards on 7 receptions. Manley currently sits in 2nd place in the LSFL with 18 touchdowns this season. Joshua Floyd put up 5 catches and 94 yards of his own, but it was the 3 touchdowns that the fans appreciated most.

And it wasn't just the offense that contributed to this win, the defense came up with several big stops and turnovers. Jay Allen came up big in the 2nd quarter as he picked off Bombers QB Andre Coles and took it 50 yards for a pick-six touchdown. "I was just thinking about not tripping on the runback; don't get bit by this turf monster. I'm a little bit on the upper side [of age] as compared to these younger guys you know" Allen would later say about the interception return. Allen finished the game with 2.5 tackles and 2 pass breakups to go along with his INT and TD.

The Stars hit the road next weekend to take on the Amarillo Venom, and finish the regular season out at home on July 1st. The Venom sport a league leading 9-1 record this season and are locked into the #1 seed for the playoffs. The Stars almost handed the Venom their second loss of the season last week, and will try again to do so in week 11.
