SAN ANTONIO- The San Antonio Stars today announced the addition of assistant coaches Joi Williams and Latricia Trammell. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The 2009 Conference USA Coach of the Year, Williams has 26 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience and most recently served as the head coach of the UCF women's basketball team from 2007-16. She led the Knights to two C-USA Championships in 2009 and 2011, as well as two NCAA Tournament appearances during the same seasons.
Prior to leading UCF, Williams was the head coach at Murray State University from 2003-07, where she led the Racers to the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Championship game and the 2007 Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Williams spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Clemson, and served in the same position at Florida from 1990-2002. She helped guide the Gators to nine NCAA Tournament berths, including the 1997 Elite Eight and seven 20-plus win seasons. The Jacksonville, Fla. native played four seasons at the University of South Florida.
"I am fortunate to have Joi join my coaching staff," said Stars Head Coach Vickie Johnson. "She has coached many former WNBA greats, such as Vanessa Hayden, Murriel Page and DeLisha Milton-Jones to name few, and has been a part of shaping their lives throughout their college careers. I am confident that she will inspire and empower our young players. Additionally, her great attention to detail will be vital to helping us achieve our goal of winning a WNBA Championship."
Trammell has over 23 years of coaching experience and most recently served as an assistant coach at Georgia State University since 2015. As head coach at Oklahoma City University from 2012-15, she led the Stars to back-to-back NAIA Championships, and received NAIA Coach of the Year and Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in both 2014 and 2015. During her three seasons guiding the Stars, the team recorded a 51-3 conference record and three regular season SAC Championships. Trammell also served as the Stars' associate head coach from 2005-07.
In five seasons (2007-12) at Western State College of Colorado, Trammell led the Mountaineers to five consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout appearances, including the championship game in 2012.
Trammell spent three seasons in the Lone Star State as an assistant coach, first at the University of North Texas during the 2002-03 season and at Texas Women's University from 2003-05. A native of Seminole, Okla., Trammell played two seasons at Seminole Junior College (1988-90) and two seasons at East Central University (1990-92).
"I am very excited to welcome Latricia to our coaching staff," said Johnson. "Her contribution and dedication to women's basketball will be a very important piece to helping us reach our goal of a WNBA Championship. Her knowledge of the game and appreciation of the WNBA will bring passion to our Stars players, staff and organization."
The Stars will tip off the 2017 season, presented by H-E-B, on the road with back-to-back games May 13 at New York and May 14 at Washington before their home opener vs. Phoenix on May 19 at 7 p.m. CT at the AT&T Center.
