Stamps sign Rahim Abdullah

(Calgary) – Today Calgary Stampeders' Senior VP of Football Operations/Head Coach, Tom Higgins, announced the free agent signing of Defensive Lineman Rahim Abdullah. The past three seasons Rahim played for the arch rival Edmonton Eskimos. In the 1999 NFL Draft, Abdullah was selected 45th overall by the Cleveland Browns. He would go on to have an outstanding rookie season with the Cleveland recording 90 defensive tackles in 16 regular season games.

As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"I'm extremely happy to be reunited with Rahim," stated Senior Vice-President of Football Operations/Head Coach Tom Higgins. "He has proven to be a dominant player and I look forward to him roaming the field for many years."

Enters his first season with the Calgary Stampeders ... signed as a free agent on April 29, 2005 ... spent the past three seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos ... previous to the green and gold Rahim was with the Cleveland Browns from 1999-2000 ... he was Cleveland's second round selection (45th overall) in the 1999 NFL Draft ... Abdullah had an outstanding rookie season, finishing fourth on the club with 90 tackles (68 solo, 22 assists) in 16 regular season games (13 starts) ... He recorded a career high 14 tackles Oct. 31/99 vs New Orleans ... In 2000, a groin injury limited his playing time to 13 games (4 starts), 17 tackles (12 solo) and two sacks ... released prior to the start of the 2001 season ... did not play in 2001.

2004

Played in all 18 regular season games with the Edmonton Eskimos including the western semi-final vs the Saskatchewan Roughriders ... led the team in tackles for a loss with 6 for 30 yards ... Rahim also recorded 5 quarterback sacks (tied for 2nd on team), 30 defensive tackles, 6 pass knockdowns, 2 special team tackles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception ... One of his best performances came early in the season vs the B.C. Lions where he recorded 4 defensive tackles and 1 quarterback sack.

2003

Abdullah returned to the field in 2003 with a vengeance recording 8 sacks (tied for team lead) and 27 defensive tackles along with 4 special team tackles, 6 pass knock downs and interception ... Best performance was versus Winnipeg in week 18 where he recorded 4 defensive tackles, 3 sacks earning him CFL Lineman of the Week honours ... he recorded 2 defensive tackles in the CFL West Final and 1 defensive tackle in the Grey Cup game.

2002

Showed tremendous promise in his Eskimo debut (July 4 vs Ottawa) with a team leading 5 defensive tackles and one blocked field goal ... recorded 2 defensive tackles and 1 sack in Week #3 (July 13 vs Toronto) ... placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season following discovery of a blood clot in his heart.

College

In 34 games (26 starts) at Clemson, Rahim posted 198 tackles (114 solo), three fumble recoveries, 16.5 sacks and two interceptions.
