Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders take the next step in their bid for a Canadian Football League playoff berth as they travel to Vancouver on Friday to face the BC Lions. Kickoff at BC Place is 8 p.m. MDT.
The Stamps (5-11) trail the Saskatchewan Roughriders by two points for the third and final playoff position in the West Division but control their own destiny over the final two weeks of the 2023 regular-season schedule. Calgary can clinch a playoff berth by winning its final two regular-season contests. One Stamps victory and a Roughriders loss in their season finale against Toronto in Week 20 would also allow Calgary to lock up a playoff spot.
Calgary is attempting to qualify for the post-season for an 18th consecutive season. The 17-year-run of playoff appearances the Stampeders carried into 2023 is tied for the fourth-longest such streak in CFL history.
Friday's contest also has implications for BC (12-5). In their final game of the 2023 regular season, the Lions need a victory to keep alive their chances to overtake the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for first place in the division and earn a bye into the Western Final.
Both Calgary and BC are coming off wins in Week 19 as the Stamps claimed a critical 26-19 decision in a must-win contest at home against Saskatchewan while the Lions picked up a 33-30 road victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats thanks to a game-winning field goal with no time remaining on the clock.
This is the third meeting of the season between the Stamps and Lions, with BC having prevailed in both previous contests. The Lions won 25-15 in Week 1 at Calgary's McMahon Stadium and 37-9 in Week 10 at BC Place.
The Stampeders are 2-6 on the road in 2023 and 3-6 against West Division rivals. BC is 6-2 at home and 8-3 against the West.
