Stampede Stop Musketeers, 4-3

Sioux Falls, SD-It wasn't always pretty, but the Stampede put an end to a three-game skid and topped the Sioux City Musketeers 4-3 Wednesday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. Matt Van Voorhis, Bryan Moore, Evan Moore and Ryan Keller all scored in the win for the Herd who improved to 12-18-1 and into sole possession of sixth place in the Western Conference. The top six teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. Charlie Lindgren earned his sixth win of the season in goal with 17 saves and even recorded an assist.

The game did not start out the way the Herd had hopped as Sioux City grabbed a 1-0 lead 13:49 into the contest when David Goodwin broke into the Stampede zone and slipped the puck through the pads of Stephon Williams who tried to poke-check the puck away. That resulted in a quick timeout from Stampede head coach Kevin Hartzell and brought Charlie Lindgren into the game. Lindgren faced just one shot in the period and the Stampede outshot Sioux City 8-2, but trailed 1-0 going into the second.

In the second, Sioux Falls got on the board 6:09 in when Matt Van Voorhis scored on a 5-on-3 advantage. Van Voorhis took a pass in the high slot from Joseph Lordo and blasted it into the upper right hand corner of the net to make it a 1-1 game. Lindgren was also credited with an assist on the goal as he started the play to Lordo.Bryan Moore gave the Herd their first lead of the night just three minutes later when deflected in a shot from Mark Solyankin for his second of the season and gave the Stampede a 2-1 lead. It stayed that way until just 29 seconds remaining in the period when Evan Moore tallied his first career USHL goal in one of the more bizarre goals you will see. Moore took the puck just outside the Musketeers blue line and wristed a shot off the glass. The puck caught an edge of the glass and bounced directly towards the Sioux City net and through the pads of Musketeers goaltender Matt Skoff to make it a 3-1 game at the end of two periods.

Sioux City came back in the third with a powerplay goal at 5:34 when David Goodwin slipped the puck inside the left circle and Brad Robbins one-timed the puck into the upper left hand corner of the net past Lindgren. It remained that way until 18:18 of the third when Ryan Keller intercepted the puck at the Stampede blue line, raced down the right wing boards and wristed the puck into an empty net to give the Herd a two goal lead. Sioux City made it interesting however, scoring with 33 seconds left with an extra attacker. That would be as close as they would get however and the Stampede held off the Musketeers 4-3 to earn their first win against Sioux City this season.

The Stampede outshot the Musketeers 30-20 on the night and finished 1 for 8 on the powerplay while Sioux City was 1 for 6. The Herd are now 9-2-0 when scoring three or more goals in a game and 7-2-0 when leading after two periods.
